The following topics make up an Ancient Civilizations course. Each of the topics below have been created as individual units designed to be completed in 4 to 36 weeks each. Therefore, to complete the entire Ancient Civilizations course in one year, you will have to use the suggested timetable below instead. You can customize this study to any length you desire by choosing how much material you cover and how long you take to cover it.

For a simple Ancient Civilizations Unit (Grades 1-3+) that can be done in a short time, use Ancient Civilizations, History Pockets. ISBN 1557999007. For each lesson, simply read from an appropriate read-aloud and then complete an activity from the History Pocket. This can be used with younger children along with using the units below for grades 3-8. Read over General Directions for Cindy's Unit Studies for more information.

Suggested Timetable for Completion in One Year:

Note: These units are in the process of being created and follow the history timeline sequence found in The Checklist. They are created as stand-alone, six to eighteen week units so you will have to pick and choose from each unit to follow the time schedule below. As these units are completed or nearing completion, I will add links to them.

• Creation Through the Flood (3 weeks, 6 lessons)
• Dinosaurs and the Bible (2 weeks, 4 lessons), IN PROGRESS
• Ancient Mesopotamia (2 weeks, 4 lessons)
• Ancient Egypt (6 weeks, 12 lessons), IN PROGRESS
• Early North and South American Civilizations (2 weeks, 4 lessons)
• Indus Civilization (2 weeks, 4 lessons)
• Ancient China (2 weeks, 4 lessons), IN PROGRESS
• Ancient Japan (2 weeks, 4 lessons)
• Conquest of Canaan, Period of Judges, & Kingdom Years (2 weeks, 2 lessons), IN PROGRESS
• The Divided Kingdom, Captivity, Exile, Return & the Persian Empire (2 weeks, 2 lessons)
• Ancient Greece (3 weeks, 6 lessons), IN PROGRESS
• Ancient Rome (6 weeks, 12 lessons)

A history based unit should include a timeline study of the major historical events, a biographical examination of the major people living in these civilizations, an investigation into the major discoveries or accomplishments of each civilization, an understanding of specific terminology, and map and culture studies of the various civilizations and their modern counterparts. Follow up with a review lesson and quizzes, if desired.
